How to Fix the Mixed Content Error in WordPress (Step by Step)

Are you seeing the mixed content error in WordPress? Mixed content error in WordPress is caused by incorrect HTTPs/SSL settings. Often times it doesn’t affect your website’s functionality, but it can have adverse affects on your website’s SEO and user experience. In this article, we will show you how to fix the mixed content error in WordPress.

How to fix the mixed content error in WordPress

What is Mixed Content Error in WordPress?

It is highly recommended to add HTTPS / SSL in WordPress because after July 2018 Google Chrome will mark all http versions of website as insecure.

SSL adds an additional security layer around data transferred from your website to users’ browsers. Search engines like Google recommend using SSL on your website as well.

All best WordPress hosting companies are now offering free SSL as part of their packages. If your hosting company doesn’t offer that, then you can get free SSL through Let’s Encrypt for your WordPress site.

If you have correctly implemented SSL on your website, then you will see a green padlock icon next to your website’s URL in the browser address bar.

Secure content sign

On the other hand if your HTTPs/SSL settings are not properly setup, then you will see an info sign or a broken padlock icon in the address bar.

Not fully secure due to mixed content

This indicates that while your website is using a SSL certificate, some content on your website is still served from non HTTPS urls.

You can find out which content is served through insecure protocol by using the Inspect tool. The mixed content error will be displayed as a warning in the console with details for each mixed content item.

Mixed content displayed in developer tools

If it is just a single item that you can manually fix, then you can go ahead and fix it by editing the post, page, or theme file where it appears.

However, in most cases these items are added dynamically by WordPress or stored in your database. In that case, it will be hard to detect all of them and fix them manually.

That being said, let’s take a look at how to easily fix the mixed content error in WordPress.

Fixing Mixed Content Error in WordPress

First thing you need to do is install and activate the SSL Insecure Content Fixer plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » SSL Insecure Content page to configure the plugin settings.

SSL secure content plugin settings

This plugin provides different levels of fixes to the mixed content error. We will explain each one of them, what they do, and which one is best for you.

1. Simple

This is the fastest and recommended method for all beginner users. It automatically fixes the mixed content error in WordPress for scripts, stylesheets, and WordPress media library images.

2. Content

If the simple method doesn’t fix the mixed content error on your website, then you should try this method. It will use all the features of simple, in addition to checks for fixes inside WordPress content and text widgets.

3. Widgets

This includes all fixes applied in content level plus an additional fix to resources loaded in all WordPress widgets on your website.

4. Capture

This method captures everything on every page of your website from header to footer and replaces all URLs with HTTPs. It is slower and would affect performance of your website.

5. Capture all

When all above levels fail, then you can try this method. It attempts to fix everything which may result in some unexpected behavior on your website. It will also have the most negative impact on performance.

After selecting a content fix level, you need to scroll down to the HTTPS detection section. This is where you can choose how to detect the HTTPs content on your website.

HTTPS detect

The default option is to use a WordPress function, which would work for most website.

Below that you will find other options which are particularly useful if you’re using Cloudflare CDN, nginx web server, and more. Go ahead and select the method that you think applies to your website depending on your particular setup.

Don’t forget to click on the save changes button to store your settings.

You can now visit your website to see if this resolved the insecure content issues on your website. Make sure to clear your WordPress cache before checking your website.

If the mixed content error in WordPress is not fixed, then revisit the plugin’s settings page and readjust the fix levels.

How to Disable Specific WordPress Plugins for Mobile Users

Recently one of our readers asked if it is possible to disable specific WordPress plugins on the mobile version of their website? Like with anything in WordPress, there’s a plugin for that. In this article, we will show you how to easily disable specific WordPress plugins in mobile version of your site.

Disable specific WordPress plugins in mobile

Why Disable Specific WordPress Plugins for Mobile Users

WordPress does not load inactive plugins when someone visits your website. However, it does loads all the active plugins and then depending on a plugin it will load required scripts and stylesheets as well.

See our guide on how WordPress works for a behind the scene look at how it loads plugins.

All good WordPress plugins try to only load when needed. However, sometimes it is difficult for plugin authors to guess whether you will need the plugin or not. In such situations, they opt to load the required files just in case.

Some users who want to get a perfect score in the Google speed and performance test, often want to disable specific plugins for mobile.

That’s where this article can help.

Let’s take a look at how to easily disable individual WordPress plugins for mobile version of your website.

Setting up WordPress Plugin Organizer Plugin

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Plugin Organizer plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Important: Plugin organizer is a very powerful plugin. Reordering or disabling plugins can cause conflicts and unexpected behavior which could make your site inaccessible. We recommend that you create a complete WordPress backup before disabling or reordering any plugins.

Upon activation, you need to visit Plugin Organizer » Settings page to configure plugin settings.

Apart from default options, right now you just need to turn on the following options.

  • Selective plugin loading
  • Selective mobile plugin loading

Don’t forget to click on the ‘Save Settings’ button to store your changes.

Creating a Must-Use Plugin for Plugin Organizer

Plugin Organizer needs a must-use plugin to work properly. It will automatically try to create it for you, but if it fails, then you will have to create it on your own.

Let’s start by checking if the plugin was able to create the MU plugin automatically.

You can do this by going to the Plugins » Installed Plugins page. You will see a new link labeled Must-Use and clicking on it will show you the installed MU plugins on your site.

Must use plugin installed

If you don’t see the plugin or Must-Use plugins link, then this means that the plugin organizer failed to create the file, and you will need to manually do it yourself.

First, you need to connect to your website using an FTP client or File Manager app in cPanel.

Next, you need to go to the /wp-content/mu-plugins/ folder. If you don’t have a mu-plugins folder in your /wp-content/ folder, then you need to create one.

After that you need to go to /wp-content/plugins/plugin-organizer/lib/ folder and download the file called ‘PluginOrganizerMU.class.php’ to your computer.

Copy MU Plugin

Next, you need to go to the /wp-content/mu-plugins/ folder and upload the file from your computer.

Upload MU plugin

The Plugin Organizer can now use this file to properly manage your plugins on mobile as well as desktop.

Disable Specific WordPress Plugins in Mobile Version

Plugin Organizer makes it very easy to disable any WordPress plugins on mobile. Simply head over to the Plugin Organizer » Global Plugins page.

You will see two columns on the screen. The first column is for ‘Available items’ which contains all your installed WordPress plugins. The second column is for ‘Disabled items’ with disabled standard and disabled mobile boxes.

Global Plugins

First you need to click on the Disabled Mobile box to expand it. After that drag and drop the plugins you want to disable from the available column to the disabled mobile box.

Disable plugins in mobile version

After adding the plugins don’t forget to click on the ‘Save’ button to store your changes.

That’s all. The plugin organizer will now disable these plugins on your mobile site.

Plugin Organizer also makes it easy to disable individual WordPress plugins for specific posts, pages, user role, and other parameters. For more detailed instructions, see our guide on how to use Plugin Organizer to speed up WordPress.

We hope this guide helped you learn how to easily disable specific WordPress plugins in mobile version. You may also want to see our list of must have WordPress plugins you should install on your website.

How To Create An Editorial Calendar For Your WordPress Blog

Create An Editorial Calendar For WordPress Blog

Do you usually know when the next post will be published on your blog? Do you even know which topics your upcoming blog posts will cover?

When you are new to blogging, it is normal to just write posts and publish them when you finish. This is acceptable when you’re just getting started as it is better to publish fresh content rather than overthinking things in the beginning.

However, once your blog starts to grow, you’ll want, or rather need, to start getting more organized with your content planning. An editorial calendar is what lets you do just that.

Srikanth already wrote a detailed post on what an editorial calendar is. But in general, an editorial calendar is a long-term content plan that allows you to:

  • Stay organized and quickly view all the upcoming topics on your blog
  • Better plan promotion for each individual post
  • Keep track of who is writing what (if you have a multi-author blog)

In this post, I’m going to show you how to use a third-party tool called Trello or a free WordPress plugin to create an editorial calendar for your own WordPress blog.

How To Create An Editorial Calendar With Trello

I’m going to start with a tool that isn’t a WordPress plugin because it’s actually what we use here at ShoutMeLoud.

Trello lets you create a “board” that contains multiple lists and cards. I’ll show you how to do this in more detail in a second, but here’s a quick idea of how you set up Trello to create an editorial calendar:

  • Create a list for each stage of the publishing process, like “editing”, “promoting” etc
  • Create a separate card for each individual post

For example, here’s what our editorial Trello board looks like here at ShoutMeLoud:

how-to-create-an-editorial-calendar

Want to make something similar for your blog?

Here’s how to create your very own editorial calendar using Trello:

Step 1: Sign up for a Trello account and create a board

Trello is a free service. To sign up, simply head here.

Once you have a Trello account, you can create a new board from anywhere in the interface by clicking on the Plus icon in the top-right corner followed by choosing Create Board:

Create Board

Once you have done that, all you need to do is give your board a title and choose whether you want to make it public or private:

Trello - Create Board

Step 2: Create lists (columns) for the various content stages

Now, you should be looking at an empty board.

To create the structure for your editorial calendar, you want to think about the various stages each blog post needs to go through before it is ready for publication.

For example, on our board we have lists for:

  • Article ideas
  • In-process
  • Editing
  • Graphics
  • Ready to publish
  • Scheduled
  • Promoting
  • Finished

But you don’t need to use the exact same structure if it doesn’t fit your processes. Try to think about what works best for your blog and how you like to create content.

Once you’ve thought of the different stages, click the Add a list… option to create your first list:

Trello - Add a list

Repeat the process until you have separate lists for all the stages your blog post will go through:

Trello - Add a list

Step 3: Create cards for individual blog posts

Once you have the overall structure of your editorial calendar, you can start adding individual blog posts.

For that, all you need to do is click on Add a card… under one of your lists:

Trello - Create cards

Then, you can give the card a title. This title is what will actually show up on the list. Once you type in the title, click Add:

Trello - Add a card

Then, you can click on the card to expand an interface with more options:

Trello Card

Here, you can add:

  • A description
  • A comment (this is helpful if you’re collaborating with multiple team members)
  • Due date, assign the card to a specific team member, add a label, and more

If you add a due date or label, it will show up on the list to help keep you organized:

Trello - add a due date or label

That’s pretty much it! Once a blog post finishes one stage, all you need to do is drag the card over to the next list to stay organized:

Trello Work Flow

It’s very simple, it’s easy to stay organized, and it doesn’t cost a penny!

I do few other things to further optimize our content process. For example, we have a checklist which is for post content publishing. I will write another post on how to create that in the near future.

How To Create An Editorial Calendar With The Editorial Calendar Plugin

If you prefer to keep your editorial calendar inside your WordPress dashboard, there’s a free plugin called Editorial Calendar that is built just for bloggers like us.

The plugin doesn’t offer very advanced functionalities in terms of categorizing posts based on what stage of the publishing process they’re in, but it does make management easier and helps visualize all your upcoming posts.

Once you install and activate the plugin, you can access your new editorial calendar by going to Posts → Calendar.

Here, you’ll see an actual calendar that shows you:

  • Upcoming scheduled posts
  • Unscheduled drafts that need a publish date

Unscheduled drafts

If you want to change a post’s scheduled date, all you need to do is drag and drop it to the new day that you want to publish it:

Change a post’s scheduled date

You can also drag and drop unscheduled drafts onto the calendar to quickly assign them a publishing date. Also, the Quick Edit button under each post helps edit basic information right there in the calendar view:

Other Free, Yet Premium, Options To Create An Editorial Calendar On WordPress

I think one of the two methods above should work for most bloggers. But if you want some other options to create an editorial calendar on WordPress, here are a couple of other solutions:

  • CoSchedule – CoSchedule is a premium tool that lets you manage and organize both, your posts and your social media promotion strategy. It is a tad bit expensive at $40 per month (plus $9 for each additional team member), but it does offer lots of time-saving features for the price.
  • Edit Flow – Edit Flow is like a slightly more advanced version of Editorial Calendar. It gives you the same calendar view, plus features that make it easier to manage a team of writers and editors. If you’re a solo blogger, you probably don’t need those extra features.

While an editorial calendar is especially helpful if you’re working with a team, solo bloggers too can benefit from a more organized approach to creating content.

It only takes a few minutes to set up. And once you have it, I bet you’ll improve your productivity and manage your blog better.

How To Download Videos Uploaded On Quora With A Single Click

In the past few months I have talked a lot about video marketing, and in the coming months you can expect more stuff related to use of videos for marketing and content distribution. Recently, popular Q&A website “Quora” added the ‘video answers’ feature, which means, you can now answer users question by recording a video. I find this feature a very powerful tool when it comes to establishing yourself as a thought leader.

If you are someone who looks for Quora video answers, you might find yourself asking a question – How do I download my answered videos on Quora?

After all, you can re-use your video content on another platform considering it is solid content. Quora, currently, doesn’t offer any direct solution for downloading videos from its platform, and there is no guarantee that they will allow the same in the near future.

However, I have figured a way out to download the videos from Quora’s platform, and it works seamlessly. I’m pretty sure there will be more ways in future, but for now, this one works flawlessly.

How to download Quora videos

This trick works for any video that is uploaded on Quora, be it an answer from you or someone else.

A popular browser add-on – “Video Downloader Professional” – is available for Chrome and Firefox. I have tested a few other add-ons but none of them worked, leave alone seamlessly.

Moreover, while testing, only Firefox browser supported the video download from Quora while Chrome didn’t. It could be due to multiple reasons, but you should try both and see which one works for you.

In this case, I’m using a Firefox browser. After installing the video downloader professional add-on, open Firefox browser and open the page on which the answer is available. For example, here is one such page. Now, click on the play button and let the video finish.

Now, click on the add-on icon and you will see the option to download the video.

Download-Quora-video

Click on Download and save the video at your desired location. That’s’ it. You have now successfully saved a video from Quora.

Here is a video guide for the same:

As I mentioned earlier, this trick works for all the videos on Quora. In fact, this browser extension works for all the embedded videos on a webpage. Sometimes it automatically detects the video, while at times you need to play the video before it can detect the file.

I’d recommend you to utilize this trick and re-share your video content on your social profiles like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn etc. Do let me know if you know of any other ways to download videos from Quora.

For now, here are a other few hand-picked articles that you might be interested in:
