This is one quote that I believe to the core. If you are able to save even one dollar on anything, you have not only saved money, but you have also earned an extra dollar today.

I previously published a guide on how to save money on hosting renewals, and today I will be sharing a similar guide for domain purchases or domain renewals.

The domain business is growing, and buying a domain is no longer a very costly enterprise. One can buy domain names from as low as $3 to $15, for popular extensions like .com, .org, .in, and so on.

Usually when you buy a domain name from a popular domain registrar, you can get a coupon code to buy it for an even lower price, but the price goes higher when you get to the point when you must renew your domains.

Some domain registrars like GoDaddy offer some small discount on domain renewals, but they offer only minor savings.

In this guide, I will be giving you a few tips that will help you to buy domains for a low price, and tips for saving money on your domain renewals as well.

Save money by getting free domains with hosting:

In most cases you need a web hosting service along with your domain, and this is one area where you can save money by not paying anything for your domain. If you need hosting along with your domain, you should choose a hosting company that offers a free domain that is included with your hosting package. For example, when you buy a hosting package from Bluehost or Siteground, they let you register one domain name for free, along with complimentary WhoisGuard privacy protection

If you already have an existing domain and you are looking for hosting, choose Bluehost as your hosting service. Bluehost offers a free one-year domain renewal of the primary domain on your hosting account. All you need to do is move your domain to Bluehost, and they will give you a one-year renewal for free.

Look for domain coupon codes:

If you are buying a domain name for the first time, you should opt for popular domain registrar companies, and run a Google search for the latest promotional coupons and codes. You can Google something like this:

Replace $month with the current month, and you will find many working domain name discount coupon codes. Some coupon codes are so good that they will allow you to grab the domain for as low as $1.29!

Why renew domains when you can transfer?

The web hosting and domain business is all about attracting new customers, thus the great deals made available for domain transfers. Generally, if you renew your domain with your current domain registrar company, you will need to pay around $12 for a .com domain renewal. But by transferring to any other domain registrar company, you can save money. You can find good transfer coupon codes on sites like Domain.com, NameCheap to migrate your domain to them, and save money.

Here are a few quick steps for transferring a domain from one registrar to another:

  • Unlock your domain at your current registrar.
  • Get the EPP code (domain authorization code).
  • On the new registrar, look for the domain transfer option, add domain and EPP code, and initiate the domain transfer.

Domain transfers usually take 2-5 days, and your website will not go down when you transfer a domain. Do bear in mind, however, that most of the domain registrars do not allow transfers away from the domain for the initial few months (60-90 days).

The three tips noted above are useful for people having 2-3 domains, but when you require many domains, it is more difficult to follow these tips due to potential management issues. To solve this dilemma, you can use an online domain management service to manage all your domains and keep all of your domains from expiring.

Another important thing that you need to remember is that you should not buy domains until you have a prototype of your website ready.

Many of us who work online are impulsive buyers. In the last four years, I have purchased more than 30 domains, and of those 30, 14 are currently in non-working mode.
