ShoutMeLoud Won The Best Indian Blogger Awards of The Year 2017

Today is the last day of the year 2017 and when I woke up in the morning, I was greeted with a great news. It was a tweet from one of the readers congratulating me for an award. I was surprised as well as felt something special is coming.
After few seconds of browsing, I got to know that Indiblogger has announced the winner of their 2017 blog awards and here it is:

ShoutMeLoud won the best blog award in more than 1 category.

This award was conducted by Indiblogger which is one of the popular Blogging community of India and has been online for more than 10 years.

This was the second time IndiBlogger team have conducted this award. Last time it was in 2013, and we won an award back then as well. You can read about the earlier award here.

We Won Best Blog Award : The Indian Bloggers Award 2013 (IBA)

They have done a good job by picking up some of the hidden gems with this award. Such awards help people to find the blogs which are worth seeing. You can see the list of all other blogs who have won the award over here.

Few last words before we bid goodbye to 2017:

2017 has been a milestone year for ShoutMeLoud and this news couldn’t have come at a better time. Just a few weeks back, we have launched the newer version of ShoutMeLoud and since then we have been super busy listening and tweaking the design and layout to give the best user experience to you. There are many new developments happening behind the hood and 2018 is going to be an amazing year for all of us. Will continue to deliver my best and it will be fun to see how life unfolds. 🙏🏻

How to Force Logout All Users in WordPress

Do you want to force logout all users in WordPress? If you suspect that your WordPress may be hacked or just need users to login again, then there is no default option to do that in WordPress. In this article, we will show you how to easily force logout all users in WordPress.

Why and When You May Want to Force Log out All Users in WordPress?

If you run a WordPress membership site or an LMS plugin, and you need all logged in users to re-login, then this tutorial is for you.

You may want to do this for different reasons. For example, if you suspect that your WordPress site is hacked, then forcing logout will allow you to properly clean up your hacked WordPress site.

Next, if you are using a membership or pay per view site and fear that users may be sharing their passwords to access content, then this method will come in handy. After logging them out, you can stop them from sharing passwords.

Another scenario is that when you use a public computer or WiFi without using a VPN service. If you are not sure that you properly logged out, then this method will end all logged in sessions.

That being said, let’s take a look at how to easily logout all users in WordPress.

Force Log Out All WordPress Users

For this tutorial, you will be editing WP Config file called wp-config.php. We highly recommend that you backup your wp-config.php file before making any changes to it.

First you will need to connect to your website using FTP or via File Manager in cPanel. Once connected, you will find the wp-config.php file in your site’s root folder.

You can right click and select edit to open the file in a text editor.

Inside your wp-config.php file you will find a code block that would look like this:

Next, you need to visit the WordPress Salts generator page. This page randomly creates new key strings that you can use in your wp-config.php file.

You need to replace your existing keys with the new ones that you just generated. Once done, make sure to save your changes and upload your wp-config.php file back to the server.

Changing the salts will automatically log everyone out of your website, forcing them to relogin.

Improving Password Security for All Users on Your WordPress Site

If you run a membership website or allow users to register on your site, then users are likely to use easy to remember and weak passwords.

Weak passwords are easy to crack and pose a security challenge for your website.

If you suspect that your website is hacked, then you may want to safely reset passwords for all users on your WordPress site. This will allow them to generate new passwords for their accounts.

However, users can still use the same password that they had before. To avoid this from happening again, you can enforce strong passwords for all users on your WordPress site.

One of the most common question we get whenever we recommend using strong passwords is how to remember all those difficult passwords?

To continue our tradition, in this article we will look back at 2017 to highlight the best of best WordPress tutorials on WPBeginner and share the success that our team had in 2017.

WPBeginner Recap 2017 by Syed Balkhi

2017 has been an amazing year for me both personally and professionally. WPBeginner website set new traffic records, our team grew to over 40 people, and our revenue from our premium WordPress plugins saw significant growth as well.

In last year’s recap, I set a goal that I wanted to reach 100,000 subscribers on YouTube by the end of 2017. We didn’t quite reach that milestone. At the time of writing this article, we have over 79,000 subscribers and over 10 million video views. I am proud that our videos have improved significantly, and we will be putting even more focus on videos in 2018. If you haven’t done so already, I would really appreciate it if you subscribe to our YouTube channel, so we can reach the 100,000 subscriber mark in 2018.

As for personal life, I’m really enjoying fatherhood. Solomon is 1 year old now, and he learned how to walk earlier this year. It’s been an amazing journey watching him grow and learn all sorts of new things. He has already been to two WordCamps. I think he was the youngest attendee at WordCamp U.S this year. Below is a picture of our family, since I know many of you often ask for it.

I took a complete break from writing on my personal blog, so I can spend maximum time with family. I have been clearing my tasks, so I can start blogging there again next year.

2017 was a great year for WPBeginner’s family of products.

Last year, we launched WPForms, with a goal to make the most beginner friendly WordPress contact form plugin. We have both the free version and premium version.

Thanks to your support, WPForms has taken the market by storm. It’s being used on over 800,000 websites now and has a 4.9 out of 5 star rating.

We completed the phase 1 revamp of MonsterInsights, the Google analytics plugin we acquired from Yoast last year. In phase 1, our goal was to add proper tracking to every area of your WordPress site and send that data to your Google Analytics. Our phase 2 update will be going out soon which will significantly improve the reporting dashboard. Our goal is to bring back helpful data inside WordPress dashboard to help you make data-driven decision.

Our flagship product, OptinMonster, continued to push the limits in 2017. We launched version 4.0 which came with powerful features like sub-accounts, user permission control, activity logs, custom branding and a new campaign creation workflow. We also added powerful targeting features like InactivitySensor, shareable MonsterLinks, campaign sound effects, and our native Shopify app. We also did a complete redesign of our website.

How to Add a Mega Menu on Your WordPress Site (Step by Step)

Recently one of our readers asked if it’s possible to add a mega menu to your WordPress site? Mega Menus allow you to add multi-column drop down menus to your navigation with rich media such as images and videos. In this article, we will show you how to easily add a mega menu to your WordPress site.

Why and Who Should Add Mega Menu in WordPress?

Mega Menus are particularly helpful for websites with a lot of content. This allows website owners to show more items in their top menu.

Popular websites like Reuters, Buzzfeed, and Starbucks use mega menus to display highly engaging and interactive navigation menus.

While default WordPress navigation menus let you add drop-down sub-menus and even add image icons next to each item, sometimes you just need a mega menu.

Let’s take a look at how to easily add a mega menu to your WordPress website.

Adding a Mega Menu in WordPress

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Max Mega Menu plugin. It is the best free mega menu WordPress plugin available in the market. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, the plugin will add a new menu item, Mega Menu, to your WordPress admin menu. Clicking on it will take you to the plugin’s settings page.

The default settings will work for most websites. However, you will need to change the menu colors, so they match the colors used by your WordPress theme’s navigation menu container.

To find out which colors are used in your theme, you can use the Inspect tool in your browser.

Once you get the color hex code, you can paste it in a text file to use later.

Next, you need to visit the mega menu settings page, click on the ‘Menu Themes’ tab and then click on ‘Menu Bar’ section.

Here you can replace the background color used by mega menu to match your theme’s navigation menu container.

Don’t forget to click on the save changes button to store your settings.

Now that we have configured the mega menu settings, let’s go ahead and create our mega menu.

First you need to visit the Appearance » Menus page and then add top level items to your navigation. For detailed instructions see our beginner’s guide on creating navigation menus in WordPress.

Next, on the Menus screen you need to enable mega menu by checking the box under ‘Max Mega Menu Settings’.

After that you need to take your mouse to a menu item, and you will see a “Mega Menu” button appear on the menu tab.

Clicking on the button will bring up a popup. Here you can add any WordPress widget to your mega menu and select the number of columns you want to display.

You can also click on the wrench icon on a widget to edit the widget settings. Don’t forget to click on the save button to store your widget settings.

Once you are done, you can close the popup and visit your website to see the mega menu in action.

How To Add Infinite Scroll To WordPress: A Beginner’s Guide

Want to make your blog as addictive as your Facebook news feed? While you probably don’t have quite as much traffic as Facebook, by adding infinite scroll to WordPress, you can get that same cool “endless scrolling” effect for your WordPress blog.

In case you’re not familiar with the Facebook news feed, ‘infinite scroll’, sometimes known as continuous scroll, means whenever a visitor scrolls to the bottom of the page, your site will automatically load new content, rather than forcing the user to click ‘next’ to perform an action.

In this post, I’ll share some of the case studies supporting infinite scroll and then I’ll show you how to easily add infinite scroll to your WordPress site.

How Can An Infinite Scroll Help Your Blog?

Infinite scroll can help engage your readers, which can subsequently lead to:

• Higher time on site
• Lower bounce rates
• More pages per visit

For example, here is some evidence from big publishers supporting infinite scroll:

• The Time.com team decreased their bounce rate by 15% after shifting to infinite scroll
• Time.com also increased its rate of users reading a second piece of content by 21%
• NBC.com increased its pages per visit by 20%

More big publishers are joining the likes of Time.com and NBC.com, with Slate recently hopping on the infinite scroll train.

Should Every Website Use Infinite Scroll?

No. While infinite scroll is great for some sites, it’s not right for every website. Nielsen Norman Group, a user experience consultancy, has a good article on why that’s the case.

Infinite scroll is not a good idea for what they call “goal-oriented” websites. That is, sites where visitors are trying to find a specific “thing”. For example, if you have a blog about technical topics, that specific “thing” could be an article about, say, how to add infinite scroll to WordPress!

So when is infinite scrolling good?

When you have a website where “each unit of content belongs at the same level of hierarchy and has similar chances of being of interest to users”.

That’s a fancy way of saying that infinite scroll can work well if you have a site where most visitors will be somewhat interested in all of your posts, rather than just a specific post.

That means if you have a blog about a casual, fun topic, infinite scroll can be a great idea. After all, it’s no coincidence that infinite scroll is used by all major social networks such as:

• Facebook
• Twitter
• Pinterest
• Instagram
• + more

How To Add Infinite Scroll To WordPress With Jetpack

If you think infinite scroll sounds like a good fit for your blog, the easiest way to add infinite scroll to WordPress is with the Jetpack plugin.

If you’re not familiar, Jetpack is a plugin developed by Automattic that includes a suite of helpful tools, one of them being the infinite scroll.

Here’s how to get started with it:

*Note: There is a small chance that Jetpack infinite scroll won’t work with your theme. While most themes have built-in support, I can’t guarantee that every single theme will work with Jetpack infinite scroll. If you struggle with your theme, this page has some solutions.

Step 1: Install and configure the Jetpack plugin

To get started, you’ll need to install the Jetpack plugin and sync it to your WordPress.com account (if you don’t already have a WordPress.com account, you’ll also need to create one).

Once you install and activate Jetpack, you’ll see an option to Connect to WordPress.com:

Follow the process to either sign in to your WordPress.com account or create a new account. Be sure to Approve access.

Once you do that, Jetpack will show you a pricing page. Don’t worry – you don’t have to pay for the infinite scroll module! Just click the Start with free → button at the bottom:

Jetpack will then take you back to your WordPress dashboard and ask you to Activate recommended features.

If you want those features, feel free to click the button. But if you only want infinite scroll, don’t click it:

Step 2: Activate Jetpack infinite scroll module

Once you’ve set up Jetpack, you need to go in and actually activate the infinite scroll module.

To do that, go to Jetpack → Settings and scroll down to the Theme enhancements section. There, check the box for Load more posts as the reader scrolls down and make sure to SAVE SETTINGS:

Step 3: Configure how infinite scroll works

At this point, infinite scroll should be active on your site already. If you want a little more control, you can configure two more options by going to Settings → Reading:

Leave the Infinite Scroll Behavior box checked. You can then choose whether or not you want it to count as a new Google Analytics page view whenever a user triggers more posts to load.

There’s no “right” answer here – it just depends on how you want to calculate your website’s analytics.

Step 4: Confirm that infinite scroll works on your site

At this point, you should be good to go! All that’s left is to confirm that infinite scroll actually works on your site.

Load your blog archive page and…scroll down! If everything is working properly, your site should automatically load more posts when you reach the bottom of the page.

Advanced: Add Infinite Scroll To WordPress With Ajax Load More

If you want more control over how the infinite scroll on your site functions, you can use the free Ajax Load More plugin.

This plugin is more complicated than Jetpack, so if you’re a beginner I recommend using the method above.

But if you’re comfortable working with some basic PHP code, you’ll have a lot more flexibility using Ajax Load More because it lets you:

• Include/exclude content by post type, taxonomy, search terms, authors, and more
• Customize the template for your content
• Choose when to trigger the infinite scroll to start loading

To use the plugin, you’ll need to:

• Build a content repeater template with PHP (the plugin gives you some templates to help you get started)
• Insert that repeater template into a post/page using the plugin’s shortcode builder

Essentially, you’ll be replacing your regular blog archive page with a page containing an ‘Ajax Load More’ shortcode.

Final Thoughts On WordPress Infinite Scroll

As mentioned earlier, infinite scroll is not the best solution for every single WordPress blog. However, if you blog about a fun topic where visitors will enjoy all the posts that you write, infinite scroll can help to:

• Lower your bounce rate
• Increase the amount of content that your visitors view

For a simple way to add infinite scroll to WordPress, you can use the free Jetpack plugin from Automattic. For more advanced users, consider Ajax Load More – just remember that it is easier to use if you already know a little bit about coding.
